PRODUCT & USAGE
Endurance Fuel: What’s important to understand is that even though you may be burning 500+ calories/hour, your body physiologically can only process 200-300 (max) calories per hour (50-75grams carbs). So, in general, we recommend starting off with 200-300 calories (2-3 scoops) of Endurance Fuel in 500-750mL of water per hour for 1.5+ hr workouts. For workouts less than 2 hours we recommend 100-200 calories (1-2 scoops)/500mL of water per hour. Listen to your body.
If you are feeling hungry dial up the number of calories, if feeling overly satiated/full, dial it back. The right amount may also vary based on the conditions (think temperature and humidity), length and your intensity (how long, how hard, how far). When it’s hotter than your usual training temperature, keep the same calorie rate per hour, but increase water to thirst.
Recovery Mix: Mix a packet of Tailwind Recovery Mix (or 2 scoops from a bag) with 500mL of water (shaken not stirred). Drink within the first 30 minutes after exercise. For longer or more intense workouts, follow with another packet of Tailwind Recovery Mix in the following 30 minutes.
Rapid Hydration: Use Rapid Hydration during efforts or workouts under 1 hour. Mix one packet of Tailwind Rapid Hydration with 355mL of water for optimal flavour and hydration. If you have a larger bottle (example:710mL), add two packets.
Caffeinated Endurance Fuel flavours: Matcha, Cola, Tropical, Raspberry. Endurance Fuel caffeine content: 35mg/scoop, 70mg/single-serving pack. *We do not recommend consuming caffeinated Endurance Fuel for more than 6 consecutive hours at our recommended serving size
Caffeinated Recovery Mix flavours: Coffee. Recovery Mix caffeine content: 40mg/scoop, 80mg/single-serving pack.
There is no caffeine in Rapid Hydration.
Yes, absolutely! Caffeine-free Tailwind products are safe for all ages to use.
The caloric needs of children during exercise can be different than adults depending on age. Feel free to ease off our Endurance Fuel recommendation of 200-300 (50-75grams carbs) calories per hour ratio. Please note that Tailwind does contain simple sugars. It’s important to understand that your body works differently when exercising than when sitting on the couch. Here’s a blog post with more detail: Click Here
We recommend Rapid Hydration for adults and kids doing shorter duration workouts and efforts.
Tailwind Recovery Mix must be shaken, not stirred! Stirring Recovery Mix will make it clump and it will not be a fun experience.
These are the 9 essential amino acids that are added to Tailwind Recovery Mix: L-Leucine, LLysine, L-Valine, L-lsoleucine, L-Phenylalanine, L-Threonine, L-Methionine, L-Histidine, L-Tryptophan. These make a complete protein. Unfortunately, our recipe is proprietary and we cannot share the amounts of each amino acid in our Recovery Mix.
Tailwind powder has a shelf life of about 3 years. Once added to water, a good rule of thumb is to treat it like juice. After mixing, if left out, it's best to drink within a day (even if it's warm, it tastes pretty good).
If mixing before your event, and being kept refrigerated, you can mix it up to three days before. You can freeze or heat your Tailwind too. Great to add Tailwind ice blocks to your pack on a hot summer's day.
We do not recommend keeping leftover Tailwind from your flask/bottle or bladder.
Yes, you can consume multiple packs of Rapid Hydration to meet hydration needs. To ensure proper mixing, use 1 packet per 500-700mL of water.
There is 80mg of caffeine in one serving (2 scoops or 1 single serving pack) of Coffee Recovery Mix

SCIENCE
The primary reason for taking on fuel during endurance exercise is to supplement your glycogen stores, thus preventing your system from being depleted, and nothing else, as glycogen is the limiting factor in endurance exercise.
If your activity will last longer than an hour and a half, or is an intense/hard session such as intervals, hills or tempo, then fuel from the very beginning of your workout, right through to the end, in order to gain the most from that session by preventing your glycogen stores from being depleted. You simply mix the required calories into as much water you would require when drinking to thirst, and sip continuously, repeating each hour until done.
What’s important to understand is that even though you may be burning 500+ calories/hour, your body physiologically can only process (digest) 200-300 (max) calories per hour, or 50-75 grams of carbohydrate per hour. So, in general, we recommend starting off with 200-300 calories/700mL of water/hour for 1.5+ hour workouts. Listen to your body. If you are feeling hungry dial up the number of calories by adding extra endurance fuel (another scoop), if feeling overly satiated/full, dial it back. The right amount may also vary based on the conditions (think temperature and humidity), length and your intensity (how long, how hard, how far). When it’s hotter than your usual training temperature, keep the same calorie rate per hour, but increase water to thirst.
If in doubt, drop us a line at info@tailwindnutrition.com.au and we can help. You've probably reached the point about an hour into your exercise where you feel like you have nothing left in the tank - and that's basically true!
Your body stores energy in the form of glycogen (sugar) and has enough to get you through about an hour and a half of exercise. Once it runs out, your blood sugar plummets, and you bonk hard. To avoid the crash, you need to put sugar back into your bloodstream.
Our products contain simple sugars (dextrose and sucrose) as our primary ingredients. Simple sugars go straight into your bloodstream to replenish glycogen stores and prevent you from crashing or having an upset stomach during or after exercise.
Many exercise fuel and recovery products contain maltodextrin, a long chain of glucose molecules, which need to be broken down into individual glucose molecules before being absorbed by the small intestine. This takes longer than you would expect and causes GI distress for a lot of athletes. Your body runs on glucose so that's what Tailwind provides.
Tailwind’s electrolyte profile mimics the composition of sweat that an average person would sweat in one hour. If you want more information on electrolytes, you can read about it here.
Short answer is no, each 200 calories (2 scoops) of Tailwind Endurance fuel contains around 606mg of sodium, or the equivalent of 4 salt tablets, so there is no need to supplement with anything else. Each of us have a sodium content that is as unique to us as our own fingerprint is, and a heavy sweater is usually an indicator of a higher sodium content than another individual. It does not mean that you need to have “extra” sodium.
Your intake is not dependant on your physical size, but on your digestive system’s ability to function while under stress (endurance exercise). We are all individuals, and as such each have different rates/abilities of digestion, however for most people, 200 calories (50grams carbs) per hour will not cause GI issues and be sufficient to supplement glycogen stores. Through training you can work out what your “sweet” spot is, by dialling it up or down using hunger as your guide. Your stomach (digestive system) will not send you hunger signals if it is getting all it can physically digest. If you get hungry, simply increase the number of calories, and vice versa, remembering not to go over 300 calories per hour.
The burning ratio (fat/glycogen) is not dependant on your intake and operates as an independent system. So, while your body will be burning a higher amount of glycogen and less fat during that time, your digestive (intake) system can still only handle the 200-300 calories per hour. Remember, you are simply supplementing your glycogen stores when fuelling during your endurance workout, as that is the limiting factor, so keep your 200-300 calories (50-70grams carbs) per hour trickling in from the start to the finish irrespective of the sporadic workload increases/decreases.
During endurance exercise our system is simply looking to replenish glycogen stores, as this is the limiting factor. To simplify things, the way our system works it that the stomachs’ purpose is to turn whatever we put into it, into a liquid with small enough particles (it breaks it down) in order to pass into the lower intestines where it is absorbed into our bloodstream. So, all solids are turned into liquid in order to be absorbed, and this process takes time and energy. With Tailwind Endurance fuel, it is already in liquid form, so no need to wait in order to be passed to the lower intestines. In short, as afar as the digestive system goes, there is no difference between liquid and solid food, except that solids require extra work as they need to be turned into a liquid with small enough particles first. Please also be aware that with each 100 calories of solids (gels are classed as solids as far as our stomachs go), roughly 280-330 mL of liquid needs to be ingested in order to make that solid into a liquid state in the stomach. If you do not consume the liquid, your system will take its moisture from your bloodstream to aid digestion.
As per above, no need to, as Tailwind Nutrition provides all the calories your system can digest in order to supplement your glycogen stores, which is the limiting factor in endurance exercise. Your body will not be looking for fat (we all have enough reserves), nor will it be looking for protein (used to repair muscles) until your glycogen stores are replenished, which won’t happen until you stop. So simply, your system is purely looking for glycogen supplementation during endurance exercise and nothing else, and the simplest source is simple carbohydrates.
We understand that the idea of liquid nutrition takes some getting used to, and many start by having both solid foods and Tailwind until they “see the light” and use Tailwind as a sole source of energy. In order to make sure you don’t tax your digestive system, make sure that you are only taking onboard 200-300 calories per hour with both sources combined. In other words, if your sandwich is around 100 calories, then only use 1 scoop or 100 calories of Tailwind Endurance fuel, thus making it a total of 200 calories for that hour.
It is a common misconception that sodium will prevent/stop cramping, and you will often see people with sprays etc. containing sodium swearing blind that it stopped their cramp. What sodium does is block the neural pathway from the muscle to the brain, so while the muscle is still cramping, the brain feels no pain. This “masking: can lead to further injury/stress on that muscle, which could lead to long term damage. While there is no exact cause of cramping that we know of, it is understood that it is a domino effect brought on by muscle fatigue of a particular muscle or muscle group being over worked for what it has been trained for. As muscle fatigue is related to hydration and fuelling, the recommended way of solving a cramp is to back off the intensity, make sure you are on top of your rehydration and fuelling, stretch the muscle out and start off at a lower intensity. Sodium is more used as an aid to absorbing your fuelling and hydration, as it activates the sodium potassium pumps in the lower intestines causing a synergistic effect, thus increasing absorption if consumed with your hydration and fuel source.
Our Endurance Fuel does not have protein in it for one big reason: protein is harder to digest (a contributor to GI distress) when you are exercising! Protein is essential for exercise recovery and overall nutrition, but not during activity. We recommend consuming a little protein at least an hour before you begin exercising, and absolutely including protein with your recovery after.
Tailwind Recovery Mix with water is the perfect post-workout recovery drink. We add complete protein, electrolytes, healthy fats from coconut milk and just the right amount of carbohydrates. Recovery Mix is also non-GMO, gluten free, vegan, soy free and dairy free.
Check out our science page for all the details on how our Recovery Mix works, and how it stands up to other proteins on the market.
You may have noticed that many sports drinks that contain protein conform to a certain carbohydrate-to-protein ratio. They may have a 4:1 ratio, or a 3:1 or a 5:1 ratio. This ratio is based on calories. For example, a sports drink with a 4:1 ratio that contains 100 calories of carbohydrate will contain 25 calories of protein. A 4:1 ratio of carbohydrate-to-protein is probably ideal if you are intending that protein to be used as fuel. In that case, adding protein to your sports drink is a way to add more calories, without adding more carbohydrates. If that’s your goal, that’s fine, but the goal of our recovery drink is to rebuild muscle.
Tailwind Recovery Mix happens to have a roughly 4:1 ratio of carbohydrate-to-protein, but that has nothing to do with our method for determining how much protein to use. It turns out that, for the purposes of rebuilding muscle after a workout, protein that is not a “complete protein” is wasted. Incomplete proteins are not used to rebuild your muscles, they are simply burned as fuel. Only complete proteins are used to rebuild your muscles. (For more on complete proteins, see below)
Tailwind Recovery Mix takes a very high-quality rice protein and supplements it with individual amino acids to create a perfectly complete protein. Then we add just the right amount of that complete protein to rebuild muscle, based on the latest science.
So, while Tailwind uses a 4:1 ratio of carbohydrate-to-protein, that really isn’t what matters for a recovery drink. What matters is the percentage of your protein that is complete. The rest is wasted. We start with a high-quality rice protein and add individual amino acids until the protein is perfectly complete. Whey and soy proteins don’t even come close. We have chosen a natural cane sugar sweetener for Rapid Hydration. Compared to artificial sweeteners, cane sugar is easy to digest and facilitates hydration via active transport mechanisms. It also assists as a flavour carrier and makes the drink taste better without having to add artificial flavour enhancers.
Rapid Hydration is naturally gluten-free, however, it is not certified gluten-free. This means the product is not tested for gluten during production. We have active measures in place to prevent accidental cross-contamination, but there is a very small chance gluten below 20 ppm can be found in Rapid Hydration. People with diagnosed Celiac should be aware of this.
RAPID HYDRATION
Mix one packet of Tailwind Rapid Hydration with 18-24oz of water for optimal flavor and hydration.
Rapid Hydration is intended to keep your body well balanced during shorter or light workouts - at the gym, on a hike, going on a quick run or ride – or just to stay hydrated on your busy days. For longer or high-intensity efforts when you need sustained energy, use Tailwind Endurance Fuel.

Electrolyte powder is a great way to get your required daily intake of water, sodium and potassium. Electrolytes help maintain the body's nerve and muscle function by exerting some force on their surfaces; they also regulate blood volume through hydration! Maintaining an optimal amount can prevent cramping up during intense exercise or reduce fatigue caused from long periods at work (or both). The best part? You don't need any extra effort - just make sure you drink plenty while training so that those cells have what they need to function properly.
The perfect time to drink electrolyte powder is when you’re preparing for an intense workout, a rigorous exercise routine or athletic performance. You should also consume this during feverish periods of illness as well as vomiting and diarrhoea treatments because it provides needed hydration in those cases too!

SUSTAINABILITY
At Tailwind Nutrition Australia, our commitment to sustainability runs deep in every aspect of our operations. In our warehouse and office spaces, we prioritise energy efficiency by utilising smart lighting and maximising the use of natural light to save energy. The design of our workspaces incorporates energy-efficient windows and insulation, creating an eco-friendly environment for our team.
Recycling is a fundamental part of our daily routine. We've implemented a comprehensive recycling program covering paper, plastic, glass, and other materials, demonstrating our dedication to responsible waste management. To further minimise our environmental footprint, we actively promote digital documents and double-sided printing in our office to reduce paper usage.
As part of our exciting initiatives to address packaging waste, we encourage our customers to choose the larger bag over individual sticks, significantly reducing packaging and potential litter. Our individual sticks feature a thoughtful "spout" design, eliminating the need to tear away the entire top section and minimising the risk of contributing to litter.
In the pursuit of sustainability, we've transformed our packaging practices by introducing a scoop made entirely from recycled materials, effectively reducing waste and showcasing our commitment to environmental care. Additionally, by keeping all our team members local, we contribute to a reduction in commuting emissions, further lessening our impact on the planet. At Tailwind Nutrition Australia, sustainability is not just a goal; it's a shared journey that shapes our operations to be both environmentally conscious and beneficial for the planet.
